Commencing use of your intellectual property in Syria If you are intending to commence use of your IP in Syria, we can assist you in assessing the level of risk of infringing third party rights. We conduct searches of the official registers for patents, trademarks and designs, as well as other sources, and provide an analysis of the nature and extent of the possible risks. Registration of intellectual property A central part of our work is the registration of intellectual property rights in Syria. We file and prosecute applications for the registration of trademarks and designs and the grant of patents. Madrid applications designating Syria If you have filed an application for an international trademark registration under the Madrid system and you have received a provisional refusal of registration for your Syrian designation, we can represent you before the Trademark Office in responding to the refusal. Maintenance of intellectual property rights We can assist you in maintaining your patents, trademarks and designs in Syria by attending to renewals and payment of annuities, as well as recording assignments and licences and changes of name and other owner details. Watching services The Directorate publishes trademark and design applications for opposition purposes, as well as granted patents. Oppositions We are able to represent you in oppositions to the registration of trademarks and designs. Recovery of famous marks If you are the owner of a famous mark and a third party has obtained ownership of the mark in Syria, we are able to represent you in the recovery of the mark before the Directorate. Infringement identification If you are concerned that your intellectual property may be being infringed in Syria, we are able to conduct the necessary research to identify and monitor suspected infringements. Enforcement of rights The 2007 trademark and designs law provides for the enforcement of trademark and design rights by means of procedures handled by the Directorate. We are able to assist you in identifying the sources of counterfeit products, advise you on the best means of enforcement and carry out the procedures to remove counterfeit products from the market. Dispute management assistance IP disputes can be difficult to manage from outside of Syria. We are able to provide local hands-on dispute management assistance including briefing and instructing local counsel, advising on dispute resolution strategy and following and reporting on litigation progress. Commercialisation assistance If you are proposing to commercialise your intellectual property in Syria, we are able to assist in carrying out relevant due diligence, in overviewing the negotiation and document preparation stages and in monitoring any post-completion steps.
